RICK FOX

Composer Rick Fox spends most of his time in various orchestra pits in his usual role as musical director/conductor. He got his initial start in the theatre working in Tom Kerr's Western Canada Theatre Company. He cut his teeth as a teenager touring with shows like "Godspell", "Canterbury Tales", and "Jacques Brel is Alive...". Further studies followed, first at London's Guildhall School of Music and then private studies in New York where he also worked as a jazz pianist. Returning to Canada he settled in Toronto and began a 25 year run of shows (as musical director) punctuated, earlier, by trips to the regional theatres accross Canada, and later, by jobs in New York. He was a co-creator, co-composer for the Canadian Celtic extravaganza "Needfire" which played at both the Royal Alexandra and Princess of Wales Theatres in Toronto. He also produced the soundtrack recording for EMI. Canadian premieres that he has done include "Rent", "The Who's Tommy", "Ain't Misbehavin'", "The Phantom of the Opera", and most recently, Disney's "The Lion King". In the fall of '03 he will be serving as musical director for the Canadian premiere production of "The Producers" at Toronto's Canon Theatre (formerly The Pantages). His New York credits include the Broadway productions of "Blood Brothers" and "Rent", the Off-Broadway production of "Once Around The City' and "Colm Wilkinson and Patti LuPone in Concert" , a television special for PBS taped at the Hammerstein Ballroom.

Rick is delighted to have Brent Carver sing the title role having worked with Brent in various situations for many, many years. Included in those collabourations are "Jacques Brell, 20th Anniversary" at Toronto's Massey Hall, "Young At Heart" for CBC and Brent's acclaimed one-man show.

Apart from the theatre Rick has written music for a number of TV shows including all of the music for "Nilus the Sandman" and episodes of "Freaky Stories". He has served as arranger and musical director for Cynthia Dale's CBC special "Cynthia" and Albert Schultz's "Young At Heart" (also for CBC). He has also written orchestral arrangements for Michael Burgess, John McDermott, Colm Wilkinson, and Brent Carver. He performs in concert with Cynthia Dale and served as musical supervisor on her CD ...To Dream.

Rick has been nominated seven times for the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Musical Direction, winning three times: for "Ain't Misbehavin'", "Company", and"The Who's Tommy".
